FEREBEE-HOPE: Ferebee-Hope Community School Complex, located in Ward 8, is in the Southeast quadrant. The school opened in 1974 with an initial enrollment of 1,000 students. Originally called Washington Highlands Elementary School, the school was named for the community where it resides -- now one of the poorest communities in the District. Ferebee-Hope was named for two community servants who worked tirelessly on behalf of the residents of Southeast, Dr. Ferebee and Mrs. Hope. Today the school serves approximately 360 students in preschool through grade six. Most students live in the community and are continuing the tradition of their family members by attending the school.
