General Colin Powell Confirmed Keynote Speaker at
Ferebee-Hope's 2009 Career Day

What: In an effort to encourage young students to look into their future careers, Communities In Schools of the Nation's Capital, Ferebee-Hope and St. John’s Episcopal Church will host Career Day to expose students to a wide variety of exciting careers that they ordinarily would not have a chance to learn about and encourage them to stay in school. Students will hear from a panel of professionals, attend a special assembly and participate in interactive demonstrations with presenters. The goal is to raise awareness among students about the diverse professions that are available to them in this country.
WHY: Located in Ward 8, Ferebee-Hope resides in a community that faces myriad social and economic challenges.
WHO: Featured Keynote Speaker: General Colin Powell
WHEN: Friday, June 5, 2009 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
WHERE: Ferebee-Hope 3999 8th St SE, Washington, D.C.
FEREBEE-HOPE: Ferebee-Hope Community School Complex, located in Ward 8, is in the Southeast quadrant. The school opened in 1974 with an initial enrollment of 1,000 students. Originally called Washington Highlands Elementary School, the school was named for the community where it resides -- now one of the poorest communities in the District. Ferebee-Hope was named for two community servants who worked tirelessly on behalf of the residents of Southeast, Dr. Ferebee and Mrs. Hope. Today the school serves approximately 270 students in preschool through grade five. The large school complex also houses a DC Department of Parks and Recreation site, DC Department of Aquatics site, and DC Child and Family Services Agency satellite site.”
