Tutoring

Communities In Schools of the Nation's Capital is currently looking for individuals interesting in serving as volunteer reading tutors to elementary and teenage DCPS students during the 2012-2013 school year.  Typical activities include reading to one another and completing worksheets together. Tutoring will take place at Garfield Elementary School (map).

Volunteers at Garfield will serve as tutors to students in the testing grade on a one-to-one basis during the school day.  The tutoring program schedule will be updated shortly.

We ask that volunteers be able to participate at least in one 1-hour session every week.

Tutors will receive training and support from the staff Reading Specialist as well as the Communities In Schools Site Coordinator.

The ideal candidate will possess strong reading and writing ability, good communication skills, and a positive attitude. Candidates should feel comfortable interacting with disadvantaged youth in a school setting
